We have a small but meaningful update out of Florida.
As of October 1st, a new Florida law is on the books: unlawfully discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school during school hours or official activities is now a second-degree felony.
Let that sink in for a moment. Before this law, it wasn’t. In a state that is home to Parkland — where 17 students and educators were killed in one of the deadliest school shootings in American history — it took until 2026 for Florida to make this change.
We’ll take it. And we’ll keep pushing.
Because here’s the truth: one law doesn’t make a school safe. It doesn’t undo years of under-investment in mental health resources, conflict resolution, and community-based violence prevention. It doesn’t bring back the people we’ve lost. And it doesn’t address the deeper, systemic failures that allow gun violence to remain the leading cause of death for children and teens in America.
But it is proof that sustained pressure works and that when communities refuse to accept the status quo, the law eventually has to catch up.
Florida still has a long way to go and so does the rest of the country. March For Our Lives will be here every step of the way — pushing for the policies, the culture shifts, and the investments that make schools actually safe, not just legally protected.
Will you donate today to help us keep that pressure on in Florida and across the country?
With love and resolve,
