Trump wants Matt Gaetz to be Attorney General.
This is a dangerous and disturbing choice for many reasons, but for us, it’s personal.
Matt Gaetz is not only CURRENTLY being investigated for serious allegations of sexual misconduct, but he also has a long and storied track record of being a gun extremist.
In a 2019 congressional hearing about gun violence, he attempted to have two fathers of Parkland victims tossed out of the room when they objected to his idea that a border wall would be more effective than background checks at ending school shootings.
In 2015, Gaetz introduced an open-carry bill that would have allowed individuals to carry firearms anywhere, including schools and churches.
After the murder of Trayvon Martin, Gaetz doubled down in his support of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law.
He supported efforts to overturn the 2020 election, voted against certification of the results, and has continuously defended violent January 6 rioters.
He believes it’s a “God-given right” to openly carry firearms in public and has pushed for this legislation in Florida.
This is who Matt Gaetz is. He doesn’t give a d*mn about victims of gun violence. He only cares about keeping his gun lobby ties intact and protecting the far-right’s unfettered access to guns.
Trump’s nomination of Gaetz for Attorney General sends a clear message: this administration is going to do everything it can to tear down the gun safety progress we’ve made.
