There are some massive news out of the Supreme Court that we need to talk about.

On June 18, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously in United States v. Hemani, narrowing a 50-year-old federal law that completely banned anyone who uses illegal drugs from owning a gun.

Writing for the majority, Justice Neil Gorsuch made it clear that the government cannot simply label every occasional marijuana user as “categorically violent and dangerous.” Instead, prosecutors now have to prove that a person’s drug use actually poses a specific threat to public safety.

While legal experts and civil liberties advocates are calling this a historic intersection of the war on drugs and the Second Amendment, it highlights a truth we’ve known from day one:

All the lobbying and court cases in the world won’t save us without a massive culture shift around guns in this country.

The legal landscape is shifting fast, and the courts are going to keep chipping away at status-based firearm restrictions. We can’t just rely on federal bans to keep us safe — we have to build safety from the ground up.
