We need to set the record straight – January 6th was a direct attack on US democracy. Four years later, Donald Trump is promising to pardon the attackers within his first hour in office.
The attack on our democracy and the threats to members of Congress was fueled by a culture of gun glorification, disinformation, and irresponsible gun laws. Years on, hatred and lies are still festering.
As we prepare for Trump to take office this month, we know that we have much to do to continue to defend our democracy. The path ahead is dangerous – right-wing extremism is on the rise and political violence is increasingly normalized.
But this violence is not inevitable. We can disarm hate and preserve democracy WITHOUT resorting to fascism or violence.
We believe that democracy is worth fighting for, and so are our lives and our rights.
Today, we are reflecting on and renewing our commitment to a future free from gun violence and a safer democracy. We’re not taking no for an answer. We will hold our leaders accountable and ensure gun safety is a top priority.
