Good morning. My name is José González and I’m a Board Chair at March For Our Lives Foundation. But more importantly, I am a father.
I never expected to be working in gun violence prevention, but six and a half years ago, my family’s life was forever changed. You never believe it will happen to you until it does.
My child, X González, was at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on that fateful Valentine’s Day in 2018.
X and their friends and educators were attacked in what should have been one of the safest places for them to be: their school. Seventeen were murdered; another 17 were wounded. 34 families were devastated and this horrific tragedy forever altered our community.
Nothing can ever erase the violence we experienced that Valentine’s Day, and nothing will ever bring those kids and educators back. But the response of X and their classmates inspired me to join forces with our young people as they undertake this critical and lifesaving work.
Together we’re fighting for a future free from gun violence. Every day our work inches us closer to that goal and I’m so proud of the progress that we’ve been able to make in six years.
Today, I’m coming to you as a dad. I need you with me. Our fight is going to get even grittier as we face another four years of an administration that prioritizes the gun industry over our children’s lives and we need to be able to throw our full weight behind protecting and expanding gun safety progress.
