As Mason’s mother, Maria Schermerhorn, courageously shared in court: “I could not control every choice my children would eventually make, but I was responsible for controlling what I put into their hands.”
This verdict marks a monumental step for accountability in America. It sends an unmistakable message that facilitating access to lethal weapons when red flags are flying carries severe, life-altering consequences.
But accountability after a tragedy can never replace prevention before one occurs.
No courtroom sentence can bring back the students and teachers we lost, nor can it fully erase the trauma endured by survivors and families. Justice in court is essential, but our ultimate goal must always be a world where these massacres never happen in the first place.
