206 votes.
That’s all that kept Ken McCool’s opponent, Tricia Cotham, in office in 2024 after she helped erode reproductive freedom across North Carolina.
See, Cotham was elected as a Democrat. Then in 2023 she switched parties, handing Republicans a veto-proof supermajority in the North Carolina House on a silver platter, and cast the deciding vote to restrict abortion access across the state.
And now, the North Carolina GOP are only one seat away from regaining a veto-proof supermajority. When I talk about how vital it is that we build Democratic power at the state legislative level, this situation is precisely why. We have to invest in expanding majorities and picking up seats in red states so that one vote isn’t all that stands in the way of the GOP’s radical agenda.
And with just 10 days until Election Day, we have a real chance to flip Tricia Cotham’s seat blue and stop Republicans from gaining a veto-proof super-majority in North Carolina. That’s why I’m so fired up about Ken McCool.
Ken made history as one of the youngest elected officials in North Carolina at just 21 years old. As Mayor Pro Tem of Matthews, he expanded affordable housing, secured the largest park investment in a generation, and helped bring high paying jobs to the region.
That’s exactly the kind of bold young leader this district deserves — someone who will truly show up and deliver for his constituents.
Winning Ken’s race is absolutely critical to protecting the Democratic governor’s veto power. Republicans are just one seat away from a veto-proof supermajority in the House, which would let them override the governor on everything from affordable housing to healthcare.
District 105 is competitive, but it’s winnable — and Ken is exactly the candidate to take it all the way. He just needs us to have his back in these final days.
Thank you,
David Hogg
