Utah Republicans cut off his mic mid-speech on the state senate floor. Multiple times.
They called him a punk.

“If wanting a little public accountability from our state leaders makes me a punk, so be it.”
And he kept going. That’s who Nate is — state senator, defender of Utah’s land and water, and the most consistently outspoken progressive voice in a chamber dominated by a Republican supermajority.
He’s running for Utah’s 1st Congressional District, and his primary is on June 23rd. If he wins, it’ll be history-making: Nate would be the first progressive Democrat ever sent to Congress from Utah.
That won’t just be a win for Utah. It’ll be a signal about where the future of the Democratic Party is headed.
Nate grew up with a deep love for the outdoors. The mountains, the wilderness, the water — that’s not just where he feels at peace, it’s foundational to who he is. Before he got into politics, he spent years working for clean energy companies and environmental organizations, advocating for renewable energy across the Mountain West. And In his first ever race, Nate walked into the Democratic primary and beat a 36-year incumbent, winning by over 50 points.
His very first bill as a state senator was to save the Great Salt Lake, and he’s still fighting that fight. The lake is shrinking at an alarming rate, and as the lakebed dries up, it exposes toxic dust that gets blown directly into communities where hundreds of thousands of Utahns live. He’s introduced bill after bill to set measurable recovery goals and protect the lake’s water supply. He’s also passed a law modernizing Utah’s power grid, making it more efficient, easier to add renewable energy in the future, and reducing wildfire risk.
And Nate’s commitment to fighting for working people goes beyond policy. He’s navigated student debt, relied on SNAP benefits to get by, and lived paycheck to paycheck. Congress needs more leaders like Nate who have actually lived that reality and know what it’s like to navigate today’s economy, not just talk about it.

Utah just went through redistricting battles that created a new seat in Salt Lake County, opening up a rare opportunity for a Democrat to flip a U.S. House seat in Utah. Voters passed a fair map initiative, Republicans tried to kill it, but a court upheld it. Because democracy worked, there’s a real progressive running in a genuinely competitive seat.
And just like us, Nate doesn’t take money from corporate PACs or special interests. In Congress, he’ll take on Trump, the billionaires, and the establishment — and he won’t back down.
