Last week, Axios reported that some longtime Democratic members of Congress are “pissed off” about the wave of young progressive primary challengers running against them.
Honestly? Good.
Because our generation is pissed off too.
We’re pissed off that Democrats keep losing winnable races while party leadership tells us to wait our turn.
We’re pissed off that Congress is full of asleep-at-the-wheel incumbents who have stopped fighting for their constituents while housing costs explode, student debt crushes millions, and health care grows more and more out of reach.
We’re pissed off that when young people step up to run, we’re told it’s somehow disrespectful, and that they’re tired of hearing our voices.
According to Axios, right now, more than half a dozen House Democrats in their 70s and 80s are being outraised by younger challengers running to replace them.
That’s not a coincidence. That’s a clear message.
And as I’ve said before, this was never about age. It’s about complacency and accountability. It’s about whether you’re still fighting for the people you’re supposed to represent.
Voters are hungry for leaders who understand the issues working people are facing right now. Leaders who have dealt with those problems firsthand.
Because when politicians hold onto power for decades, ignoring the needs of their constituents and blocking the next generation from stepping up, our Party and our democracy stagnate.
That’s why Leaders We Deserve exists. We back fearless young progressives who aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo, who live the issues on the ballot, and who are ready to fight like hell because they know the stakes are far too high to play it safe. And we do it without taking a dime of corporate money.
And listen, yes, some establishment Democrats are angry about it. But guess what, you can either be liked by everyone and do nothing or you can be hated by a few and actually do something. After 2024 we don’t have the option but to do something radically different.
But change has never come from people in power deciding they’re ready to give it up. It comes from people rising up and demanding something better.
Thank you,
David Hogg
