As of April 1, 68 voting members of Congress have announced their retirements.
Leaders We Deserve was built for this exact moment. When I was in college part of what I studied was the history of the Cold War and in particular I remember learning about the end of the Soviet Union. One of the reasons for its rapid collapse was that they had three leaders die one after another within 2.5 years. When I looked at Congress, it was clear soon we would have a power vacuum ourselves brought on by leaders either retiring very soon or sadly dying in office. Now, that hypothesis is coming true with 68 members retiring, and we have the opportunity of a lifetime to build a better Congress.
Every time an older member retires, we have an opportunity to elect someone from the next generation who is ready to lead and not just be a younger version of the same corrupt people we have there now. That’s why our candidates reject corporate PAC money. But because of that it takes real resources to compete in races across the country. That’s why your support matters so much.
Can I count on you to pitch in $25 to help power our game-changing work?
When Leaders We Deserve gets involved in a race to support a young progressive candidate, we help level the playing field against the well-funded status quo candidates.
But if we can’t compete, the special interests and corporate-backed establishment will easily be able to prop up a candidate who represents them — not the people.
Every open seat is an opportunity. It’s a chance for us to claim a different kind of future. It’s a chance to replace an outgoing class with a new generation of leaders who truly are different, are not backed by the same corporate PACs, and will do more to protect our democracy than write a strongly worded letter to Trump.
