We defeated I-2109! Thanks to the hard work of activists like you, we successfully stopped the super-rich from giving themselves a tax break at the expense of Washington’s children, families, and small businesses.
I’m proud of the work we’ve done together to defeat I-2109. Partnering with the NO on I-2109 campaign, more than 150 organizations and small businesses across Washington, and activists like you, we showed the super-rich that we won’t back down – and we WON!
Thank you for doing your part to defend the capital gains tax – for protecting crucial childcare and education funding, making sure the ultra-wealthy pay what they truly owe, and fighting for a fair and just tax code. We did this together, and I’m so proud to have worked alongside all of you for this victory!
The NO on I-2109 campaign shared a statement last night as results came in:
Tonight Washington state voters resoundingly rejected Initiative 2109, which would have repealed the state’s limited capital gains tax that funds billions for education, childcare and school construction.

“After more than a decade of relentless advocacy that included a legislative fight, legal challenges all the way to the United States Supreme Court, and now two ballot initiatives, Washington’s capital gains tax is now here to stay. Washington voters have made their voices heard and made clear what we have said all along, that the rich should pay what they truly owe in taxes.”

“Washingtonians have spoken loud and clear for progress toward fixing our upside-down tax code, as the middle class pay three times their income in taxes as the wealthiest Washingtonians. Thanks to the capital gains tax, we have gone from 50th to 49th most regressive tax code in the nation. Tonight voters said, let’s continue going forward, not back.”
