Like most ten-year-old boys, mine loves superheroes and hates villains. (He also has a passion for engineering sewer systems, but that’s a story for another day.)
If you’ve ever spent time with kids, you know this: their moral compass is loud. They know what’s fair. And they definitely know what’s not.
So when I explained Washington’s tax code in kid-level terms, my son didn’t miss a beat:
“That’s not fair!”
And he’s right.
Even kids understand that it’s wrong for people with the most wealth to pay the least in state and local taxes, while working families shoulder the highest burden. What’s harder for kids to see is the ripple effect:
- Families, especially Black and brown families, pushed further from opportunity.
- Generational wealth kept out of reach.
- Communities left without the basics: child care, strong schools, accessible health care, and support for seniors and people with disabilities.
But here’s what my son did understand: We don’t have to accept this. We can fight back.
And right now, we need everyone who believes in fairness — kids, adults, communities across Washington — pushing for a tax code that actually works for the people who make this state run.
Because last session, the wealthiest in our state didn’t just oppose progressive revenue proposals, they tried to shut them down entirely. They even threatened ballot measures to undo any progress we made. And we can expect more of that.
It’s not just ten-year-olds who can see how when big corporations and the wealthy rig the system for themselves, it sets up an unfair system for all of us.
Our kids deserve better than a tax code built to protect the ultra-rich while starving the public systems the rest of us rely on.
Can we count on you to make sure lawmakers hear from regular people, not just the wealthy few?
We need to deliver a loud, unapologetic reminder that Washingtonians want a tax code that works for all of us.
