Fighting fear with joy. Combatiendo el miedo con alegría.
Este mes de junio nos dedicamos a celebrar las libertades que hemos conseguido. Es algo absurdo en muchos niveles porque la Constitución trata a todos por igual. Son las actitudes y acciones de la gente contra las que luchamos. Este es el primer año en que el 19 de junio se reconoce como fiesta nacional (Juneteenth) y lo celebramos. Junio es el mes del PRIDE y lo celebramos. Pero, y lamentablemente siempre hay un pero, nuestra celebración se ve afectada este año por los ataques agresivos de aquellos que se sienten amenazados por el concepto de protección igualitaria y libertad para todos. Ya sea el “no digas gay”, o la negación del racismo institucionalizado, o el tratar a los trabajadores como siervos, o el rechazar el derecho de la mujer a la autonomía sobre su cuerpo, o el creer que los derechos de portar un arma de fuego descuidadamente es más importante que el derecho de un niño a vivir. Mientras haya personas que nos miren como si fuéramos “aquellos”, tendremos que estar atentos y mantenernos firmes. Espero que sus celebraciones de este mes estén llenas de grandes alegrías y promesas.

This month of June we take time to celebrate the freedoms we have won. This is absurd on many levels because the Constitution treats all equal. It is the attitudes and actions of people that we struggle against. This is the first year that Juneteenth is recognized as a national holiday and we celebrate. June is PRIDE month and we celebrate. But, and there is sadly always a but, our celebration is tempered this year with aggressive attacks by those that feel threatened by concept of equal protection and freedom for all. Whether it is “don’t say gay”, denial of institutionalized racism, treating workers like indentured servants, rejecting a woman’s right to autonomy over her body, or believing that those unfit to own firearm rights are more important than a child’s right to live. As long as there are people that look at us and see “them” we will need to be vigilant and stand fast. I hope your celebrations this month are filled with great joy and promise.

After last weekend's huge and wonderful PRIDE in the Tri-Cities Yakima is following up with a parade! Give a big shout-out to Wenatchee as they celebrate their pride tomorrow also. Este año, el 19 de junio (Juneteenth) ha sido reconocido como fiesta nacional por primera vez. Quiero dar las gracias al Consejo de Diversidad e Inclusión de Tri-Cities por el evento Red and Black on the Green para marcar la ocasión. Estaré en el evento Juneteenth de Yakima y representantes de mi campaña estarán en Tri-Cities. Acompáñenos el sábado 18 de junio mientras celebramos esta parte tan significativa de la historia de nuestra nación y el recuerdo de aquellos que vinieron antes y han hecho tanto. Juneteenth is recognized as a national holiday for the first time this year. I want to thank the Tri-Cities Diversity and Inclusion Council for the Red and Black on the Green event to mark the occasion. I will be at the Yakima Juneteenth event and representatives of my campaign will be in Tri-Cities. Join us Saturday, June 18th as we mark this most significant part of our nation’s history and the remembrance of those that came before have done so much. It is now to all of us to carry the work forward.

¡Marcha por nuestras vidas! El 11 de junio, personas de todo el país marcharon para exigir un enfoque de sentido común para la compra y el uso de armas de fuego. En el centro de Washington, la mayoría de nosotros crecimos rodeados de armas y aprendimos a respetarlas. No tiene sentido para nosotros cuando vemos a la gente exhibiendo rifles de asalto con cargadores de alta capacidad como si estuvieran viviendo la fantasía de un videojuego. Si eres un propietario de armas responsable, sabes que se trata del tirador, no del rifle, y que la única bala que cuenta es la que está en el cargador. Si realmente estás cazando por deporte, nunca tendrías la oportunidad de usar una segunda bala.
March for our lives! On June 11th people all across the nation marched to demand a common-sense approach to firearm purchase and use. In Central Washington, most of us grew up around guns and learned respect for them. It makes no sense to us when we see people brandishing assault rifles with high-capacity magazines like they are living out some video game fantasy. If you are a responsible gun owner you know it is about the shooter, not the rifle and the only bullet that counts is the one in the chamber. If you truly are hunting for sport, you would never have a chance to use a second bullet.
