Doug White Update 04-22-2022

The State of the Campaign – El estado de la campaña

We have just finished the second quarter of the campaign, and we have great progress to share. Fundraising for the first quarter was record breaking, and so was the second. We raised more money than any other democratic challenger in the state and more money than any republican challenger in congressional district four!

The structure of this campaign and our ambitious outreach plan has moved us further, faster and with greater success than other campaigns.

My campaign is organized to include all of the Democratic County and Legislative District chairs. In doing so we immediately tap into decades of knowledge and vast networks of relationships and resources. This allowed us to start at a point that other campaigns could not reach in years, much less an election cycle.

I recognized that the traditional election model would only get us so far. We cannot ignore the way things are done, but traditional politics lack inclusion. When I asked how we would reach the 50+% of my constituents that are Hispanic the old answer was, “we can translate a flier into Spanish”; that is not inclusion. I brought on board the first full time paid Diversity Advocate to reach out to communities that were disenfranchised from the political process and let them know there is room in this campaign for everyone. The response has been overwhelmingly positive.

I  have set high goals for this campaign. I have already been from the top of this district to the bottom and back again 3 times already and every week we:

  • Hold a Town Hall
  • Work towards knocking on 50,000 doors before July
  • Phone bank twice
  • Hold one event
  • Participate in more than 5 events held or sponsored by other organizations
  • And we are just getting started!

We will start selling yard signs next week @ www.DougWhite4Congress.us  The campaign has also been working to fully translate all of our literature, including our website, into Spanish.  Be sure to check out the website on May 1st to see the fully Spanish version, and while you’re there you can reserve your yard sign!  Polling will also take place in late May. We are ramping up our travel, fundraising and community outreach, with plans to reach three times as many people in June as we did in April.

Doug celebra “el tomar democráticamente” en Goldendale.

Doug celebrates “Drinking Democratically” in Goldendale.

Our work towards diversity has also grown. We are planning events that will include food and childcare, so that we can reach out to young families. We have established relationships with local organizations in several counties, which triples the amount of outreach we are able to achieve.  This amplifies work already being done for social and environmental justice.  We are working closely with a group of local young Latinos to continue to expand our grassroots network in Tri-Cities through journaling, media, radio/podcast and music and art. We are working closely with Colville and Yakama tribe members to establish a long-standing relationship with indigenous communities. We look forward to attending our first pow-wows and other significant events.

In the past week we also attended the H2A and Immigration reform forum hosted by the Ag and Rural caucus. The H2A program is far from perfect and it needs more accountability and resources to enforce regulations. It is good to be in discussion between growers and farmworkers via UFW.

I attended the In Her Shoes experience aimed at giving an inside look from the perspective of domestic violence victims. Domestic violence is one of the leading causes of violence in our communities, and needs to be directly addressed.

How we win!

The fundamentals of this race changed significantly over the last few months making our path to victory clearer. All indications continue to point to Dan Newhouse not surviving the primary. Indicators include a complete rebuke by the state and district republicans and his fundraising has plummeted.

Loren Culp expected a boost to his campaign with Donald Trump’s endorsement, but that did not translate into any money. So far his only notoriety has come from his inexcusable and loutish behavior.

The GOP split when the district republicans turned their back on Donald Trump and endorsed Brad Klippert.

Newhouse isn’t guaranteed the votes to win the primary.  But even with that reality, the rest of the republicans can not get their act together to form a campaign or manage outreach. Half of them are in debt already! Perhaps to ensure I will face Culp in the primary, which is the best scenario for my victory, I would have to loan him some money and do some campaigning for him.

My campaign is grateful for the coalition we are building, and the work that is getting done.  I look forward to continuing to update you on our path to victory.

There has been a lot of conversation and questions regarding the City of Richland Charter Amendment Measure No. 1 (aka Richland Districting). Background:Since Richland was incorporated, 67 years ago, its population has more than doubled (from 24,000 to over 60,000) and its land area has significantly expanded (from 8 square miles to 35 square miles). In a nutshell:The current at-large system, which was adopted in 1958, means that everyone in Richland votes for all 7 City Council positions. Many citizens of Richland have felt under represented and argue that the city has outgrown its current at-large system. ✅ Voting YES on Measure No. 1 supports changing the City Council election structure so that five of the seven council members are elected by geographic district. This is intended to improve accountability and achieve more even representation across the city.❌ Voting No on Measure No. 1 supports keeping the City Council election structure the way that it is.Richland voters, the choice is yours. Do you feel fairly represented by the current system? Or would you rather have council members serve both their district and the city? -------------- Need more details? Here are some common questions:❓ Question: How were the districts created?Answer: The districts were created by following Washington State law using 2020 census population data and GIS precinct data layers. The district boundaries are contiguous, and are equal in population. Council members serve both their district and the city as a whole, preserving teamwork while preventing lockstep conformity. - A Better Richland (ABR) used the state law (RCW 29A.76.010) and guidance from the Municipal Research and Services Center to draw the districts.- The state law requires 1) each district be as close as possible in population, 2) that the districts be composed of whole precincts, and 3) the precincts in a district be contiguous.- Each proposed district has almost exactly 12,000 residents per 2020 census data. The population of each Richland precinct (a geographical area defined by the state for electoral purposes) varies from 361 to 2,219 people. The whole, contiguous precincts for each district are listed in the proposed charter amendment.❓ Question: What is going on with the Proposed District 2?This proposed district takes that particular shape due to the population density in that area and the guidelines listed above (continuous districts with approximately 12,000 residents).❓ Question: Is this politically motivated? Is this gerrymandering?Answer: The proposal is a non-partisan effort supported by Richland voters across the political spectrum. Claims that districts are politically motivated or gerrymandered are completely unfounded. Check out the proposed district boundaries at abetterrichland.com and decide for yourself: experience.arcgis.com/experience/40eb8af4aef640b5a5cba2ef523b1bc2/page/Page?org=s-d-gSources:app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=29A.76.010mrsc.org/explore-topics/elections/basics/district-based-elections?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAYnJpZB...www.abetterrichland.com/charter-amendment-1 www.sos.wa.gov/elections/data-research/reports-data-and-statistics/precinct-shapefiles?fbclid=IwZ... ... Greetings fellow Democrats!

It's getting cold out, so we're going to move indoors for our winter gatherings. This month we'll meet at the round Table Pizza on Court Street in Pasco. November 14 at 6pm Pacific. Come gather with like-minded folks and share some fellowship, food and beverages. As is our normal practice, Tri-City Democrats will order several pizzas to share. We'll have the donation box available for those who care to financially support the group. Some of our generous members are likely to purchase pitchers of beer to share. If you want the salad bar or soft drinks, you are on your own for those items.

At this writing, we do not have a planned program, but we will have 'Hate Has no Home Here' signs available. We are also in the process of proposing some minor alterations to our bylaws, which we may discuss briefly and possibly vote on.
