WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH: SHIRLEY CHISHOLM
As we mark Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating the legacy of trailblazer Shirley Chisholm.
Shirley Chisholm’s legacy is characterized by her resilience and dedication to breaking barriers for underrepresented groups in American politics. Her famous words, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair,” demonstrate her dedication to making change.
Chisholm made history as the first Black woman elected to the House of Representatives, representing New York’s 12th Congressional District. And a few years later, she became the first Black candidate to run for a major political party’s presidential nomination.
Chisholm co-founded the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Women’s Political Caucus, championing the rights of marginalized groups throughout her career. She was a fierce advocate for civil rights, gender equality, and social justice.
