• He championed civil rights as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (which he helped found on this day in 1960!).
• He led the March on Selma, bravely crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday.
• He served as a U.S. representative for more than 30 years, earning himself the nickname “the conscience of Congress.”
