Yesterday morning, the Supreme Court granted Donald Trump broad immunity from prosecution.
We want you to see this, from Justice Sotomayor’s dissent. She says with this ruling:
If the president “Orders the Navy’s Seal Team 6 to assassinate a political rival? Immune. Organizes a military coup to hold onto power? Immune. Takes a bribe in exchange for a pardon? Immune. Immune, immune, immune.”
Trump sent out a fundraising email declaring victory immediately after the announcement. He said it was a “BIG WIN.”
But the truth is, it is a huge loss for our democracy. It flies in the face of the notion that no one person is above the law — let alone the most powerful person in the country.
It also underscores how dangerous a Trump second term would be with this immunity. This is a man who has already pledged retribution against his political rivals. Now, with the cover of this SCOTUS decision, he will almost certainly do it.
That makes stopping him much more important. But we cannot do that alone.
