Firearms are the most common weapons used in domestic violence homicides. Every 12 hours, a woman is shot and killed by a current or former intimate partner, and in America, 60% of mass shooting events between 2014 and 2019 were either domestic violence attacks or perpetrated by those with a history of domestic violence.
This troubling statistic highlights the urgent need for comprehensive gun safety measures to protect survivors and prevent senseless tragedies in our communities. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court made a historic 8-1 ruling in U.S. v. Rahimi, prohibiting individuals subject to a protective order from possessing a firearm. This ruling ensures that individuals deemed a credible threat by the courts cannot possess firearms, potentially preventing further violence, and is a MAJOR victory in our movement to end gun violence.
However, the battle is far from over. Despite a promising Supreme Court ruling in U.S. v. Rahimi, our work remains unfinished. Just a week before this decision, the predominantly conservative Court overturned the federal ban on bump stocks—deadly devices that effectively convert assault weapons into machine guns—in Garland v. Cargill—ignoring the pleas of gun violence victims and weakening efforts to enact gun safety laws across the country.
We should never have reached this point—and another Trump presidency could lead to more extreme judicial appointments, resulting in dangerous decisions that endanger countless lives.
