June 21 is ASK Day, a national reminder that one simple question can help keep kids safe:
“Is there an unlocked firearm where my child plays?”
As summer begins, kids spend more time out of school and in places where parents and caregivers may not know how firearms are stored. We ask about allergies. We ask about pets. We ask about supervision. We can ask about secure firearm storage too.
This conversation is not about judgment. It is about safety. Unsecured firearms in the home can turn a normal day into a preventable tragedy. That is why the Alliance is working to make secure storage a central part of how Washington prevents gun violence.
Secure storage works. When firearms are locked, unloaded, and stored separately from ammunition, we reduce the risk of unintentional shootings, firearm suicide, and other forms of family fire. We also help build a culture where responsible gun ownership includes protecting kids, families, and communities from preventable harm.
This is the kind of change we are fighting for in Washington. In 2027, passing secure storage will be our top priority, and we know it will take all of us: parents, caregivers, students, educators, public health leaders, responsible gun owners, survivors, and advocates across the state.
This ASK Day, we’re asking you to do one thing: start the conversation.
Before your child goes to another home, ask how firearms are stored. Share the message with another parent or caregiver. Talk to your family about why secure storage matters. These conversations may feel uncomfortable at first, but they can save lives.
Gun violence is preventable. And prevention can begin with one question.
