Right now, Washington stands at a crossroads. For years, our state has been a national leader in gun violence prevention, proving that evidence-based, community-led strategies save lives. But a new budget proposal threatens to dismantle that very foundation.
Governor Ferguson’s proposed supplemental budget includes a 50% cut to the Office of Firearm Safety & Violence Prevention (OFSVP). This isn’t just an administrative reduction; it is a retreat from our commitment to public safety.
If these cuts move forward, lifesaving programs will be eliminated entirely including community violence intervention, safe storage & suicide prevention, and credible messenger programs.
Gun violence is a major driver of our state’s fiscal challenges, costing Washington taxpayers $171 million every year. Cutting prevention doesn’t save money, it just shifts the bill to our hospitals, schools, and emergency responders.
We cannot afford to go backward. Will you send a letter to your legislators right now and urge them to restore full funding for the OFSVP?
Washington has built a lifesaving infrastructure that other states envy. Let’s make sure our leaders protect it.
