Alliance for Gun Responsibility – December 16, 2024

As we head into the holiday season, the Alliance for Gun Responsibility is acutely aware about the upcoming impacts that the election will have on the gun violence prevention movement.

Gun violence continues to be the greatest threat to young people’s futures, and the uncertainty surrounding policy changes only adds to the instability they already face. We have come too far and accomplished too much to let Trump and his allies roll back our progress. Nationwide change takes time, but local progress will help continue to grow our national movement. 

The road to a future free from the gun violence epidemic will continue to run through the states.

This year, the Alliance for Gun Responsibility, alongside countless advocates and supporters like you, achieved critical victories in Washington, including the following highlights:

• Passed new requirements for firearms dealers to help keep firearms out of the wrong hands.
• Passed mandatory reporting of lost and stolen firearms.
• Increased limiting firearms in sensitive places where our children frequent.
• Worked with stakeholders across the state to continue to implement the laws that we have passed in the last decade.
• Endorsed more than 100 candidates for office up and down the ballot. We are proud that our political work has resulted in electing our first GVP super majority in the legislature.
• Continued to see a reduction in suicide by firearm while the national average increased.

We also supported the work of our partner organizations in three other states:

• Oregon: Working with the Alliance for a Safe Oregon, we are successfully defending Measure 114 in the Courts, the state’s permit to purchase law passed by voters in 2022. Oregon also ran their first political program electing new gun violence prevention champions to office.
• Michigan: Michigan completed an unprecedented year of progress with passage of a package of domestic violence protection laws, as well as engagement with hundreds of volunteer educators and leaders to accelerate awareness and implementation of protection order and safe storage laws. Our partners at End Gun Violence Michigan also turned out thousands of volunteers to advocate for laws and funding to combat violence.
• Maine: Our partner organization, Maine Gun Safety Coalition, has successfully secured over 3/4th of the signatures required to get Extreme Risk Protection Orders on the ballot.

Our federal government has failed to keep our communities safe and will now attempt to roll back even the smallest protections we have in place. Change must come one state at a time; much like the right for folks to simply marry who they want to marry, or the right for women to vote. We are making major strides in gun safety efforts at the state level.

Gun violence isn’t just a  political debate or abstract issue — it is  a matter of life and death, and the futures of countless young people, full of potential and promise, are at stake.
