Last week, a court in Texas struck down federal rules that restricted the sale of silencers, and small, easily-concealed shotguns and rifles.
Almost immediately, gun dealers like Sportsman’s Warehouse sent out marketing emails to profit off the newly-relaxed laws. This is what motivates the gun lobby: profit.
One thing is clear: Deregulation unleashes retailers to profit off of and ultimately harm communities. This is why our work is so important.
Our state has regulated silencers and banned ghost guns, which prevents retailers from capitalizing on rulings like this here in our state. Our work helps prevent the gun lobby and gun retailers from capitalizing off of endangering our communities.
Thanks in part to our national work supporting in-state gun violence prevention groups across the country, other states – from Oregon to Maine – were also insulated by last week’s dangerous rulings. But if we want to save lives everywhere, then we cannot stop here in Washington – we must invest in progress in the states.
