I’ve got major news from Olympia!
Both HB 1163 and SB 5098 were just voted favorably out of committee – and are heading to the floor for a vote. This is a huge milestone in our fight!
These bills represent some of the strongest policy tools we have:
HB 1163 (Permit to Purchase): Adds commonsense safeguards like in-person applications, fingerprinting, and certified safety training to Washington’s firearm laws. States with these systems see fewer gun deaths, less firearm trafficking, and greater officer safety.
SB 5098 (Sensitive Places Expansion): Keeps guns out of high-traffic public spaces like parks, government buildings, and county fairgrounds—places where families, kids, and public employees gather.
We’re celebrating tonight, but we can’t lose momentum. The next step is a vote by the full legislature – and every voice counts.
If your legislator sits on one of the committees that just passed these bills, send them a quick thank you. If not, send a message urging them to vote yes when these bills hit the floor.
Thank you for being part of this movement. Let’s keep the pressure up and get these bills passed.
