ACLU Supporter, this is the reality that far too many students face right now as they settle into the new school year – and it represents a blatant infringement of students’ First Amendment rights.
Just last year, 32 bills were signed into law that restricted students and teachers from discussing race, gender, or sexual orientation. Year after year, anti-democratic politicians have limited what students get to learn, think, and talk about in school – banning books and even restricting curriculum.
All young people have a First Amendment right to learn free from censorship or discrimination – and the ACLU is committed to defending this right. We’ve led the fight against book censorship since we successfully lifted a nationwide ban on James Joyce’s “Ulysses” in 1933.
The fight is far from over, which is why as a new school year gets underway, the ACLU has launched a campaign with a $75,000 goal to fight censorship – and a generous donor is matching all gifts from supporters like you.
