It’s Election Day, ACLU Supporter – and here’s what I’m seeing.
Millions of Americans have already voted – and today, millions more are in line at the polls to use their political power to advocate for their values, their communities, and the future of this country.
I’m proud to cast my ballot alongside them. And I’m even prouder of the work that our ACLU team is already doing to make sure that every single one of those ballots will be counted and respected.
Our lawyers are monitoring election developments around the country – in fact, we have more certification monitors this year than ever before. We’re ready to take swift action to ensure every eligible voter can access the ballot box and every vote is counted – helping staff the Election Protection Hotline and talking directly with voters to parse confusing new election rules or identify voter intimidation. They will be up long after polls close to see every legal filing through to the end.
And tomorrow, those same lawyers will be back to their briefs, working to ensure every vote is counted and election workers can properly certify the results without political interference.
Defending voting rights never ends: The work to safeguard the 2026 midterms is already underway for our Voting Rights Project, even while they’re losing sleep for 2024.
This election is about more than one moment. When millions of voters turn out to the polls, I think of the work our teams of lawyers, policy experts, and organizers have been doing for years to end voter suppression, fight for fair maps, advocate down-the-ballot, and educate voters. I think of the over-500 cases we’ve fought at the Supreme Court since our founding – more than any other private organization! – defending every fundamental right and safeguarding our right to political participation. As we vote today, we celebrate the work we’ve been doing since long before this election cycle even started.
And we’ll keep showing up: as our democracy’s staunchest defenders through the days ahead.
Election results will likely take a while. As our election officials count the millions of votes cast by folks like you and me, I’m grateful to be on the team ensuring that our democracy works the way it should. I’m grateful to get to keep fighting every day for a democracy that represents all of us.
Your support has helped us build to this moment. As we work to protect our democracy, I’m glad to have you with us.
Onward,
Anthony Romero
