We’ll be talking about his latest book, Chain of Ideas: the Origins of Our Authoritarian Age, a deep-dive on the startling effectiveness of the use of the “Great Replacement Theory” over time and in this moment. In his book, Dr. Kendi charts the steps– what he calls “the chain of ideas”– that authoritarians have built to create the conditions for authoritarianism to thrive.
Dr. Kendi’s first two books, Stamped from the Beginning and How to Be Antiracist, were crucial guides for millions of people during pivotal moments in American politics, from Ferguson in 2016 to the summer of 2020. Chain of Ideas: the Roots of Our Authoritarian Age contains important lessons for white antiracists about the history and psychology around why authoritarianism is appealing to white people, and what we can do to combat it.
On tonight’s call, we’ll talk about how MAGA and the Trump regime use “the chain of ideas” to drive us apart, what it will take to understand ourselves as more deeply connected, and get into the particular role and responsibility that white Americans have in this work.
