The Trump administration has spent nearly the last two years systematically dismantling our freedoms and civil liberties, attacking vulnerable communities, and abusing executive power.

But long before any of that happened, the ACLU’s nationwide network of resistance – anchored by affiliate offices in every state, D.C., and Puerto Rico – was building a Firewall for Freedom ready to withstand this assault.

We’re proud to report we just surpassed 160 legislative victories at the state and local level since President Trump took office.

This is exactly what our founders had in mind in 1920 when they decided our Constitution needed a permanent defender. No matter who is in office, the ACLU works tirelessly to ensure our fundamental freedoms are upheld.

The ACLU’s nationwide network of affiliates uniquely enables us to take our fights local and build firewalls in states and cities against the worst of the Trump administration’s policies. These are just a few of the recent victories our affiliates have secured:

• In Massachusetts, ACLU of Massachusetts’ work expanded abortion access, created a protocol for schools and libraries to handle politically motivated book bans, and protected the rights of immigrants and all Massachusetts residents.
• In both Delaware and New Jersey, our affiliates have helped pass laws to protect and expand voting rights and ensure that Black and minority voters are not denied a voice in our democracy.
• In Hawai’i and Vermont, affiliates worked to protect sensitive locations, including schools, hospitals, from being targeted for warrantless arrests and immigration enforcement.
• In Connecticut, ACLU of Connecticut fought back against unregulated mass surveillance and helped enact safeguards against data collected from automatic license plate reader systems.
