Flock Safety’s 83,000+ cameras violate our privacy every day.
Authorities can easily abuse Flock’s mass surveillance system to access more than 83,000 cameras nationwide, putting vulnerable civilians at risk. The ACLU is fighting back against this unregulated misuse of data and unrestrained invasion of privacy in our communities, but we need you with us.
Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs) from companies like Flock Safety are violating our privacy across the country, taking photos of every passing vehicle and logging them into massive nationwide databases – making it possible to track anyone’s movements.
Many people don’t even realize this is happening, but law enforcement agencies already are abusing ALPR data – from pursuing people writing critical op-eds to providing footage for ICE to go after immigrants without warrants and tracking women as they access reproductive health care.
The ACLU is working alongside advocates, local officials, and people like you to spread awareness, apply public pressure, and push cities across the country to terminate their contracts with Flock. When this isn’t possible, we have model bills community members can encourage their state and local legislators to adopt to restrict ALPR use for only legitimate public safety concerns, such as felony investigations, locating missing persons, and identifying unregistered and uninsured vehicles.
Together, we are making progress. Cities and towns across the country have canceled their contracts with Flock. New Hampshire enacted a state law requiring law enforcement to delete license plate data that is not connected to a crime within three minutes. Several states prohibit the use of Flock data in immigration and abortion-related searches.
But as long as this data exists, it is vulnerable to abuse. We still have a long way to go to protect privacy and civil liberties, and that’s where you come in.
