Historically, authoritarian regimes make or break it in election years. And today we’re 75 days out from the midterms, our biggest opportunity yet to stop MAGA’s consolidation of authoritarian power and build legislative power for every issue we care about: abolishing ICE, winning Medicare for all, stopping data centers, fighting for trans kids, protecting free and fair elections, and more.
Our partners are organizing their folks in majority-POC areas. Our work at SURJ is to flank them and go block by block in majority-white neighborhoods, places the MAGA stronghold works to win over with racism and division. Right now, not only is there general anti-Trump momentum, but support for our movement’s agenda (and candidates who represent it) is in one of the best positions we’ve seen in decades. So now is the time to make big moves in our work: stopping MAGA where we need to, advancing working-class fighters where we can, and growing power for our movements to build for the long haul.
This spring and summer, our incredible phonebanking and canvassing teams showed up big to help drive victories for Analilia Mejía in New Jersey, Randy Villegas in California, and Will Lawrence in Michigan. This fall we’ll be continuing our 2026 electoral campaign Block by Block and shifting to phase two– Block by Block: Win and Enforce– to deliver wins and show up to protect election results.
SURJ will be continuing our work in the general election in CA-22 with Randy Villegas, MI-07 with Will Lawrence, and in the Maine Senate race. Because of deep partnerships in the South and the strategic importance of the region, we’re also working on the Senate races in Georgia, North Carolina, and Mississippi, and Justin Pearson’s run for Congress in TN-09.
These places and these races represent the breadth of SURJ’s national strategy: a commitment to the South and building Black political power, deep relationships with local partners, the strength of our local SURJ base, taking accountability for stopping MAGA in white communities, and pushing for the most progressive candidates we can.
If we do our collective work well, by November, we’ll be in a drastically different political position to stop the violence against immigrants, trans kids, and the working class, and deliver on a national agenda of affordability.
We don’t have to do it all, but we’ve got to do our part– and at SURJ, that means lasering in on key, majority-white districts where working-class white voters could go either way.
