When armed National Guard troops were sent into American cities under the banner of a “crime emergency,” we were told it was about keeping us safe.

Now, the numbers are in — and the truth is clear.

A new analysis from the Center for American Progress reveals that the administration’s $1.7 billion National Guard deployments failed to reduce violent crime, homicides, or gun violence in targeted cities like D.C., Los Angeles, Memphis, and New Orleans.

In fact, violent crime and homicides were already dropping nationwide before these troops ever set foot on city streets. The administration took credit for existing trends while spending over $1.7 billion in taxpayer dollars on heavy-handed optics.

At the exact same time $1.7 billion was poured into militarizing our neighborhoods, an estimated $500 million was slashed from violence prevention programs — funding that goes directly to survivor assistance, community intervention, and evidence-based solutions that actually save lives.

Armed troops on city corners do not heal communities, and political theatre does not keep us safe.

Real safety looks like investing in our neighborhoods. It looks like trauma-informed support, fully funded youth programs, mental health care, and community-led violence intervention teams who work every single day to stop gun violence before it starts.

We were founded during a Trump administration, and we know exactly how to call out authority when political posturing replaces human lives. But we can’t counter this multi-billion dollar illusion without a community that believes a safer, more hopeful future is possible.
