Last month, the US Supreme Court ruled that states can ban transgender athletes from participating in girls’ sports.
Here’s some context for what this means for Washington:
The measures that the Supreme Court ruled on are from West Virginia and Idaho. And they are actually less extreme than what a MAGA mega-donor is trying to pass in Washington this November.
Neither West Virginia nor Idaho required girls to undergo invasive genital exams to participate in sports.
Let’s Go Washington’s initiative here in Washington State, IL-638, would. In fact, the ballot measure, sponsored by none other than MAGA-millionaire Brian Heywood, explicitly bans using birth certificates to verify sex, forcing students to do exams instead.
Washington’s current policy has worked successfully for almost two decades. This new approach would be more expensive for our families and more invasive, medically unnecessary, and potentially harmful to our kids. It is the most extreme of its kind in the country.
While our opponent can write checks for millions of dollars, we’re relying on grassroots supporters to help us defeat these ballot measures.
