My name is Shannon McCann. I’m a middle school special education teacher and a proud WEA union member. As this school year comes to an end, I join thousands of educators in applauding the accomplishments of our students, from pre-k to college!
Every student deserves a safe, supportive, and well-resourced public school where they can learn, grow, and succeed. As a public school educator, it is both my purpose and my responsibility to provide the best learning opportunities for every child in our classrooms and communities.
Instead of addressing real challenges, these ballot measures, IL26-001 and IL26-638, make things worse for our students, families, educators, and schools.
Teachers are being asked to do more with less while facing growing challenges like:
• Inadequate school funding
• A lack of support for special education services
• Increasing class sizes and caseloads
• Rising student behavioral and mental health needs
Ballot measures IL26-001 and IL26-638 would create new confusion, bureaucracy, and costly burdens. Worst of all, these add stress and harm to students and families who are already navigating more than their fair share in today’s climate.
Many educators already spend hundreds of dollars out of their own pockets on school supplies, food, and basic necessities for students. Instead of alleviating these serious issues, these poorly written initiatives would add even more strain by creating unnecessary paperwork, unrealistic deadlines, and administrative hurdles that pull time and resources away from teaching and learning.
Our children would suffer the consequences.
Our public schools should be focused on supporting ALL students—not navigating the expensive fallout from harmful political initiatives.
Since 1889, educators across Washington have proudly stood alongside students, parents, and communities to advocate for strong public schools and a brighter future for every student. Today, that work continues.
Please join us in voting NO on IL26-001 and IL26-638.
Thank you,
Shannon McCann
