Dr. Anthony Douglas, a medical resident at the University of Chicago, knows the toll of gun violence. He’s seen what gun violence can do in his work, and he knows it comes at a significant cost.
That’s why he’s a co-author of a brand new anti-gun violence bill in Illinois.
It’s called the Responsibility in Firearm Legislation (RIFL) Act. It would require manufacturers who want access to the Illinois market to obtain a state license and pay into what would be a compensation fund for gun violence.
This is huge news.
With the RIFL Act, a gun company’s annual contributions would scale with the number of incidents that occur with its firearms. If one company’s firearms are used more frequently, they will have to pay more.
This is a game-changer to hold gun manufacturers accountable, Kendall.
Here’s the thing, the path to passing this bill is not simple. Even though many members of the Illinois legislature support this bill, we’ve got a ways to go.
