No on 2109 – September 16, 2024

After years of having the most regressive tax system in the nation, Washington state took a major step toward a more just tax system by implementing a capital gains tax. That tax is already helping fund more than 170 school construction projects across the state – and the outcome of Initiative 2109 will determine whether we build on that progress or go backward.

This fight is personal to me. I was raised by two public school teachers and got a great public school education here. Through my work as King County Executive, I am continually reminded how vital it is that our kids have safe, healthy learning environments with the resources they need to succeed.

But hedge fund millionaire Brian Heywood is trying to rip that away. He’s spent millions to put I-2109 on the ballot – an attempt to give himself and his mega-millionaire friends a tax cut at the expense of working Washingtonians by repealing the capital gains tax. The only way to defeat I-2109 is with a strong, grassroots-funded campaign to urge the people of Washington to vote NO.

We must defeat this initiative and protect our investments in children and families. With just weeks left before voting begins, I’m personally asking: Will you chip in right now to help the No on I-2109 campaign defeat Heywood’s initiative and protect funding for Washington schools?

Brian Heywood doesn’t want you to know it, but most Washingtonians will never have to pay the capital gains tax. It applies only to people making extraordinary profits on Wall Street. It doesn’t apply to the sale of a home. It doesn’t apply to the sale of a small business. It doesn’t apply to farmland, farm equipment, or anything in a retirement or college savings account.

Mega-millionaires and billionaires can afford the capital gains tax – and the rest of us can’t afford to lose it. If I-2109 passes, Washington will lose more than $2 billion in funding for school construction projects, early learning, and more – all so a few mega-millionaires and billionaires can avoid paying their fair share.
