No on I-2117 – September 1, 2024

Posted on September 1, 2024

It’s Labor Day Weekend, which means we’re entering the critical final stretch of the election. And we’ve got some big news to close out the summer….

The Seattle Times came out to oppose initiative 2117 and urge Washingtonians to vote no.

Waterways are warming, a statewide drought and lackluster snowpack have wreaked havoc on the state’s farmers, fish populations and even hydroelectric power generation. Ever-drier forests are increasingly at risk of more frequent and intense fires. July marked the 14th consecutive month of global record high temperatures, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

A ballot initiative asks voters to gut the state’s ambitious and necessary response to this growing crisis — and prohibit any similar solution in the near future.

Voters should reject the repeal.

Read more here

The announcement comes on the heels of a momentous summer for the campaign to take down initiative 2117.

Across two Summer Weekends of Action, over 200 passionate volunteers reached 36,000 voters across the state. Our supporters have tabled more than 80 events this summer and had thousands of meaningful conversations with voters. We’ve got one more Weekend of Action to go September 7-8 until we launch our persuasion field campaign.

Health experts, parents, and community leaders spoke at a powerful press conference highlighting the serious risks I-2117 poses to air quality and health, especially in the Duwamish Valley and other communities overburdened by air quality across Washington.

We launched a robust new blog and fact sheets section on our website to educate voters on exactly what’s at stake in the fight against I-2117.

Our coalition has grown to over 450 endorsing organizations and Tribal Nations. Sign up here to add your organization’s name to the list.

Grateful to be on the right side of history in this fight,

Wellesley

Check out recent coverage of the race:

THE SEATTLE TIMES: The Seattle Times editorial board recommends: Keep WA’s Climate Commitment Act — vote no on I-2117

Now is no time to tie the hands of Washington’s leaders as they tackle the growing effects of climate change and fund ways to make the state and its 8 million residents more resilient.

KOMO NEWS: Big money pouring into I-2117 ahead of the November election

“My son had his first asthma attack when he was 10 months old,” [Maggie Humphreys] said. “When it’s wildfire season, we depend on air monitoring networks. This initiative would defund expanding that network that families across our state rely on.”

KING5 NEWS

Community leaders in the Duwamish Valley are pushing back on Initiative 2117…In the Duwamish Valley, people are concerned about the impact of on clean air….”This initiative doesn’t do a single thing to guarantee lower costs for families. But what it does guarantee is more pollution for our children.

THE SEATTLE TIMES: After budget disclosure decision, WA ballot measure campaigns to ramp up

The campaign opposing the repeal of the carbon market (voting no on Initiative 2117)… in mid-August mounted a “weekend of action” across the state, enlisting volunteers to make phone calls, knock on doors and hand out literature at events, estimating they reached about 17,000 voters. A second weekend of action was held this past weekend with another planned in September.

THE LYNWOOD TIMES: Over 400 organizations and Tribal Nations join to oppose Initiative 2117

The campaign to defeat Initiative 2117 on August 19 announced that its unprecedented statewide coalition of firefighters, small businesses, Tribal Nations, doctors and public health leaders, labor unions, and environmental groups has grown to over 400 members. Since its public launch in April 2024, the coalition has grown from over 100 to over 400 organizations and Tribal Nations who oppose I-2117.
