MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
It’s Friday, Washington Democrats!
Scheduling Note
Message from the Chair will be off next week. We’ll be back on Friday, April 24. Thank you for your patience!
Working for Washington
Washington Democrats and our partners are working hard on the next major action following the third No King nationwide rallies to build support for stopping Donald Trump and JD Vance’s reckless and inhumane administration. On May 1, International Workers’ Day, we are calling on our supporters to engage in a day of “No School, No Work, No Shopping” to disrupt the takeover of our country. Here in Washington state, and around the country, workers, students, and families will be marching, rallying, walking out and taking action to demand ICE out of our communities, taxing the rich to ensure our families and not their fortunes come first, and expanding our democracy to defend fair elections. Please join us by committing to these actions here.
(WA Dems Canvassers in Vancouver, Covington, Skamania, and North Bend)
Last weekend, Washington Democrats launched deep canvassing efforts throughout our state. The purpose of these canvasses wasn’t to urge people to vote, but to listen to their top issues and build relationships that will power us to victory in November. Washington Democrats are committed to Year Round Organizing because we know that it helped power our victories in 2024 and 2025. If you want to organize your community with Washington Democrats, find an upcoming New Volunteer Information Session or Deep Canvassing Training here.

This week, I was in Louisiana with Washington’s DNC members as part of the Association of State Democratic Committees and Democratic National Committee meetings. Washington’s delegation was hard at work providing insight into the best practices and organizing wins from our Washington and how those can be applied everywhere around the country. Nationally, Democrats have won nearly 90% of all elections at every level of government. This week, Democrats flipped a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat and overperformed in Georgia’s reddest Congressional District by 25 points!
In last year’s elections, Washington Democrats helped field test new organizing tools for the DNC. This week, the DNC unveiled their new Playbook for 2026 campaigns and beyond. Traditional organizing tactics like phone calls and door knocks are decreasing in utility as more people screen their calls. Despite making more phone calls and door knocks in 2024 than in any previous Presidential campaign, we still came up short. This Playbook will give candidates, campaigns, local parties, and organizers the best practices and tools to ensure we win, not just this year, but every year. Check it out by clicking the image above or going here.
Democrats Fight Back
When Trump releases his all guns, no butter budget that would drastically slash social services and pump military spending to $1.5 TRILLION, it’s Washington’s own U.S. Senator Patty Murray who stands in the way of this “bleak and unacceptable” budget. The Spokesman-Review calls Senator Murray, “arguably the most powerful Democrat in the federal government at a time when her party has precious little leverage in the nation’s capital.” As Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Murray has unique say over spending bills that require bipartisan support to become law. Senator Murray shredded Trump’s last budget, saying, “Last year, I said I’d rip up President Trump’s budget and make sure Congress wrote a new one instead – that’s exactly what we did and will do again. The American people want their tax dollars going toward investments that help everyone make life more affordable – the basics like utilities and child care. Those are the investments I am going to fight for. Trump wants to build a ballroom – I want to build more affordable housing, and only one of us sits on the Appropriations Committee.” Thank you, Senator Murray, for always fighting for us!
U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal traveled to Cuba to investigate the effects of a U.S. energy blockade that has crippled the island’s infrastructure. Representative Jayapal listed Cuba’s actions to open its economy to investments by Cuban Americans, announcing the pardon of 2,000 prisoners, and collaboration with the FBI over the fatal shooting of a U.S.-flagged boat as indicators that “the moment is here for us to have a real negotiation between the two countries and to reverse the failed U.S. policy of decades, a Cold War remnant that no longer serves the American people or the Cuban people.” While the Trump-Vance administration wages wars of choice, we must have serious oversight and accountability to bring to light the humanitarian impact of their reckless policy decisions.
Attorney General Nick Brown continues to fight for our fundamental rights. Washington joined nearly half the other states in suing the Trump administration over his blatantly unconstitutional executive order blocking vote-by-mail for anyone except those pre-approved by the Department of Homeland Security. Let’s be clear: this executive order is voter suppression. Nearly 30% of all voters nationwide voted by mail in 2024 – including Trump himself. This is AG Brown’s 58th lawsuit against the Trump-Vance administration. Thank you, AG Brown, for continuing to uphold our sacred right to vote! Our Communications Director breaks down the executive order in the video below. Click the image or go here.
Welcome Stuart!
This week, Washington Democrats are welcoming our new Director of Development, Stuart Ashford. Stuart has worked for campaigns like Congresswoman Kim Schrier and has a wealth of experience helping organizations and candidates secure the resources they need to succeed. Welcome, Stuart! WHAT I’M WATCHING
Behind the Curtain: AI’s scary phase,
Axios
Anthropic’s latest AI model can plan and execute cyber attacks on its own. It’s so unnerving to its creators that they have limited the number of businesses and organizations that can access it. Congress must act to prepare essential services (think banks, intelligence systems, power plants) to guard against bad actors enabled with “superhuman powers.” Chinese state-sponsored hackers have already used an earlier Anthropic model to target dozens of organizations in a coordinated attack. Without strong safeguards, our access to healthcare, energy, and basic services is all at risk. Democrats must put forward legislation to address these issues before a crisis occurs.
Thanks for all you do,
