Gun violence is a systemic failure. It’s a failure of our laws, our leaders, and our culture. But now, we are seeing a terrifying new player in this crisis: unregulated Artificial Intelligence.
Last April, a senseless shooting at Florida State University took the lives of Tiru Chabba and Robert Morales. Robert was a dedicated FSU employee, a member of our community whose life was cut short by a gunman who — according to a new lawsuit — was in “constant communication” with ChatGPT.
The family’s attorneys believe that AI may have actually advised the shooter on how to commit these heinous crimes. This is unacceptable, and we need accountability to keep this from happening again in the future. There is no change without total accountability for every actor who enables this epidemic.
This is a new, terrifying frontier in the fight for gun safety. We are fighting for a future where no one — not a gun manufacturer, and not a tech giant — is above the law when it comes to the lives of our peers.
We are tired of being angry, but we are never too tired to seek justice. We want a future that is hopeful. Where technology is used to build communities, not to help destroy them.
Tiru Chabba and Robert Morales should still be here. Will you stand with the Morales family and demand accountability for the role AI plays in gun violence?
We refuse to back down — no matter who or what we’re up against. We will have a future free of gun violence.
