One of the most common questions we get at SURJ is: how do I talk to other white people about racism? The truth is, there is no magic set of words to learn– it takes practice. Whether it’s at your family dinner table or your neighbors down the street, our work to break the racist, anti-immigrant lies the billionaire agenda deployed towards white communities has never been more important.
Can you join us next Tuesday, February 17th at 6 pm ET for the first training and phonebank in our series, “Talk to Our Neighbors, Crack ICE”? We’ll be training you to talk to white working-class voters in the key congressional districts that will determine control of the House in the 2026 midterm elections. Using a deep listening method where you’ll engage around shared values, we’ll talk to people about their feelings on Trump’s immigration policies and deployment of ICE, and then organize them towards seeing what they stand to gain in choosing solidarity over MAGA’s racism.
Support for ICE is at an all-time low. And we know that working-class people have so much shared interest in rejecting racism and defunding ICE. As grocery prices skyrocket and basic healthcare services send families into debt, all of us– white people included– will be better off in a country where our government funds communities and not ICE terror.
Trump’s aggressive and violent deployment of ICE is causing many white working-class communities to re-evaluate their views and beliefs on immigration. Right now, we have a chance to turn towards these folks, bring them into a vision of shared interest, and get practice being in deep conversation with other white people about racism and immigration.
Join us on Tuesday to start laying the groundwork to defeat MAGA in the midterms, push the mainstream Democratic Party to take a bold stance on ICE, and skill up. If you can’t make it next week, there are many other dates and you can join at any time.
In solidarity,
SURJ
