The House has passed the government funding bill and the continuing resolution for Homeland Security appropriations and sent it to Trump’s desk, ending the partial shutdown. We now have nine days to force meaningful change on Trump’s secret police.
It will be a challenge. Designing limits the Trump regime will actually be bound by is a legislative nightmare, and as Pablo Manríquez has emphasized ICE has a $75 billion slush fund to work off regardless thanks to the MAGA murder budget. But there have been some heartening signs of spine, with multiple Democratic senators suggesting they won’t support another stopgap.
