We are at a critical juncture in Olympia, with Safe Storage (HB 1152) currently sitting in the House Rules Committee. With the “House of Origin” floor cutoff just days away on February 17, the window to move this bill to a full vote is closing fast.
As our CEO Renée Hopkins shared in her recent op-ed in The Spokesman-Review, safe storage isn’t about politics or identity, it’s a practical, life-saving step. Reflecting on the 30th anniversary of the tragedy that took her brother Arnie’s life, Renée reminded us that “safe storage is one of the clearest lines we can draw between risk and prevention.”
Firearms remain the leading cause of death for children and teens in Washington. Most of these tragedies involve a firearm accessed at home or in a vehicle. HB 1152 sets clear, common-sense standards for secure storage that reflect what responsible firearm owners already practice.
By passing HB 1152, we can prevent unintentional shootings, reduce youth suicide, and stop stolen guns from fueling crime in our communities. But we can only do it if the House leadership hears from you today.
Thank you for standing with us.
