Second date added! Lunch and learn: Join PDC staff for a discussion on grassroots lobbying
Due to high demand, the Public Disclosure Commission has added a second lunch and learn on grassroots lobbying, scheduled for Jan. 27.
If your organization plans to participate in a campaign asking the public to support or oppose proposals before the Washington state Legislature this year, you may want to learn more about the state’s grassroots lobbying law.
The Public Disclosure Commission will host a virtual lunch and learn session on this topic at noon on Jan. 27. Please register in advance. You will receive an email with a link to join on the day before the event.
These sessions last for approximately 45 minutes and include a 10-15 minute presentation, followed by a question and answer period.
Grassroots lobbying, also called indirect lobbying, is a campaign addressed to the general public, a substantial portion of which is intended, designed or calculated primarily to influence state legislation. Many grassroots lobbying advertisements urge the public to contact their legislator on a topic before the Legislature.
Washington state law regarding grassroots lobbying reporting requirements recently changed.
The PDC’s presentation will include:
- Definitions of direct and indirect lobbying
- Registration requirements for groups engaging in grassroots lobbying
- An introduction to the grassroots lobbying report (L-6), and alternate reporting for lobbyists and political committees
- Examples and more information on relevant laws in the Revised Code of Washington
- Time for questions
