Here’s what Laura, a teacher in Washington, wrote to lawmakers.
“I am working ridiculously long hours, trying to make up for what we don’t have at our school. We do not have a math interventionist anymore. We do not have enough staffing to support students learning English.
“As a general education classroom teacher, I am doing the best I can to fill the gaps, but it means giving up time for personal things like sleep and exercise. In other words, you are taxing me in terms of my time and probably sending me to an early grave as a result. When are you going to tax the super-rich instead?”
We get it. The Governor is in a tough spot with the President’s cuts on top of declining state revenue. But there’s so much wealth in Washington, it doesn’t have to be this way. A new Seattle Times report shows some Washington CEOs are taking home record-breaking compensation packages of over $100 million a year!
A cuts-only approach for Washington state means more cuts on top of what we’re already suffering from the White House and Congress. For far too many families, groceries, child care, tuition, prescriptions and doctors’ visits will be even more out of reach.
Can we count on you to share your personal experience, or what you’re hearing from others, with lawmakers, just like Laura did, so they know the true cost of these cuts?
Lawmakers get countless emails each day, but our allies in the legislature have told us that it’s the personalized messages and stories that break through the noise. That’s why sharing your story is important!
