Today, we honor the heroes who’ve served our country, the veterans who make Washington proud.
Did you know veterans make up 7.3% of Washington’s civilian population? And their service spans generations:
- Nearly one-third served after September 11, 2001.
- 27% served during the Gulf War.
- 28% served during the Vietnam era.
Here in Washington, we’re lucky to call many of our neighbors, our coworkers, and our family heroes. And these heroes deserve leaders who have their backs.
Instead of honoring their service, however, Republicans are putting veterans on the chopping block. Their latest extremist agenda would gut VA services while handing $7 trillion in tax breaks to billionaires.
Unfortunately, during the shutdown, thousands of Veterans Affairs employees were furloughed, and veterans across the country were denied critical care and benefits. The agency reported over 37,000 workers affected across the country. Veterans and their families were left waiting, wondering when Washington, D.C. would start working for them again.
This isn’t how you treat the people who served our country.
Washington Democrats will always stand with our veterans. That means protecting their benefits, their care, and their dignity.
Because honoring our veterans means more than words, it means action.
