Forty-three million Americans are set to lose food benefits on November 1st. With cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) looming, families across the country are scared, food banks are under-resourced, and local mutual aid programs are scrambling for volunteers. Meanwhile, President Trump is hard at work building a golden ballroom bankrolled by billion-dollar corporations like Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, and Meta, replacing the newly demolished East Wing of the White House.
The majority of people losing SNAP are white people, which means this is a prime opportunity to talk to them about what’s happening in this country. We know winning elections is critical to ensuring a future where no one goes hungry, so SURJ members are calling 60,000 white voters in the Virginia governor’s election. If we can boot MAGA from the Governor’s Mansion in a Southern state like Virginia, a region the far right relies on to hold power, we can deal a powerful blow to MAGA at the ballot box.
The current Virginia governor — who, when he was elected, was one of the richest politicians in the country — has taken plays right out of the MAGA playbook, like instituting a hotline in schools where students and teachers were encouraged to report trans kids to the government. The GOP candidate running this year is his lieutenant governor and hand-picked successor.
Virginia is set to have 850,000 people lose SNAP benefits because Republicans will not negotiate unless they get to rip healthcare away from Americans. The current Virginia governor is using this as an opportunity, just like MAGA, to lie and blame Democrats for this ahead of the election, intending to use white voters’ suffering to build power for MAGA’s white supremacist agenda and get his candidate elected.
We can’t let them get away with it. While the Virginia governor’s race isn’t as exciting as electing Zohran Mamdani in NYC, it is still critical. While we build the future with candidates like Mamdani, we also must block MAGA at every turn, especially in a state like Virginia.
Every MAGA defeat we can notch is a win fo r all of us. We’ve got eight days. Can you join us?
In solidarity,
SURJ
