I want to start this email by saying thank you. Yesterday marked a momentous milestone in our collective journey toward a safer Washington. With the signing of House Bill 1163 into law, we have taken a significant step forward in our mission to prevent firearm violence and protect our communities across the state.
This achievement is the result of unwavering perseverance. For over a decade, advocates, lawmakers, and community members have worked tirelessly to bring about meaningful change. HB 1163 establishes the requirement to obtain a permit to purchase firearms. This law is grounded in evidence-based practices that have been shown to reduce gun violence and save lives.
We recognize that this victory is not just about policy- it’s about the people. It’s about the families who have lost loved ones to gun violence, the communities that have been forever changed, and the countless individuals who have stood up and said, “Enough is enough.” Your voices have been heard, and your efforts have made this possible.

As we celebrate this achievement, we also acknowledge that our work is not done. The implementation of HB 1163 will require continued vigilance and dedication. We must ensure that the law is enacted effectively and equitably, and we must continue to advocate for comprehensive solutions to end gun violence.
Thank you for your steadfast commitment to this cause. Together, we have demonstrated the power of perseverance and the impact of collective action. I look forward to carrying this momentum forward together in the years to come.
Sincerely,
Renée Hopkins
