Trump is increasingly putting our young men and women in uniform in a position where they may be asked to choose between obeying their commanders and upholding their oath to the Constitution. They can be criminally prosecuted for defying a lawful order – but also for following an unlawful one. What are they going to do if they are commanded to do something questionable or flagrantly wrong?

San Francisco-based district court judge Charles Breyer found that the Trump administration willfully violated a law known as the Posse Comitatus Act, which sharply limits the use of the military for domestic enforcement, by employing troops to control crowds and bolster federal agents during immigration and drug raids.
