Yesterday began like any other workday in Midtown Manhattan. Within moments, it became a scene of unimaginable violence.
Armed with an AR-15-style rifle, a gunman stormed an office tower and took the lives of four innocent people — including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who confronted the shooter to protect others. Officer Islam was a father of two, with a third child on the way.
This wasn’t just another headline. It was the deadliest shooting in New York City in over two decades, and the 254th mass shooting in the U.S. this year alone.
This is what happens when the gun industry floods our communities with weapons of war — and our leaders do nothing. We are living the cost of political inaction. No school, no office, no place is safe until our government chooses people over profit.
At March For Our Lives, we refuse to accept this as normal. In moments that feel hopeless, young people have always led the way forward. We are organizing, advocating, and building power — and we need you with us.
