Last week, Representative Joe Morelle, the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, introduced a constitutional amendment to reverse the MAGA Supreme Court’s decision to grant Trump presidential immunity, shielding him from accountability for the crimes he’s committed.
The court’s ruling opened the door for authoritarian rule, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing now.
We don’t have kings in America, and the presidency exists to serve the American people, not the president himself. But Donald Trump wants one set of rules for himself for his own benefit and another for the rest of us.
In his introduction, Rep. Morelle stated, “No American president should be absolutely immune from criminal prosecution in our nation. Where every person is created equal in the eyes of the law, nobody is above the law.”
Trump is not a king. Demand Congress support the Presidential Accountability Amendment now to reverse Trump’s immunity from criminal prosecution.
You may recall the gravity of the Supreme Court’s ruling that granted Trump immunity: halting the three trials against Trump, denying the American people verdicts ahead of the 2024 election, and interfering with Trump’s sentencing after he was convicted on 34 felony counts in New York. As a result, this constitutional amendment was introduced in the immediate aftermath of the court’s decision.
Now, six months into Trump’s second presidency, it’s more important than ever to pass this constitutional amendment and reverse Trump’s immunity. It’s clear Trump has no regard for the law, or for governing to benefit anyone besides himself and his billionaire backers. He has consistently challenged checks and balances, ignored due process, and defied court orders.
We demand that Congress come together to right the Supreme Court’s wrong by passing a constitutional amendment that reverses Trump’s so-called immunity and reaffirms equal justice for all.
