Dear MoveOn member,
Five leaders of the Proud Boys—the far-right hate group that helped incite the deadly January 6 insurrection—are suing to make us pay them $100 million for their violent riot.
You read that right: these insurrectionists, who were convicted by a jury of their peers after trying to overthrow our democracy, are now claiming that they are the victims and are suing the Department of Justice (DOJ).1
They’re hoping that President Donald Trump—who called January 6 a “day of love”2—and his loyalists will hand them millions of our tax dollars to spread more chaos, more violence, and more hate. We can’t let it happen.
Don’t let the Proud Boys take a single penny of our tax dollars.
The DOJ should spend its budget to protect us and stop violent, organized hate groups like the Proud Boys from terrorizing our communities. But if we don’t speak out now, our money could instead end up going toward white supremacist assemblies and recruitment, all on the public dime. And it would send a dangerous and terrifying message to other far-right groups about not only what they can get away with but how they will be rewarded.
President Trump already violated his oath of office hours after he took it when he pardoned thousands of January 6 rioters on his Inauguration Day. Letting this lawsuit succeed would be an additional betrayal to the American people.
We can’t allow our government to endorse the actions of January 6th insurrectionists with $100 million in taxpayer cash to finance the next wave of extreme far-right violence. Will you sign the petition?
Across the political spectrum, Americans overwhelmingly opposed pardons for violent January 6th insurrectionists.3 Giving taxpayer money to those who were convicted would be an affront to every single person in this country. We need the Department of Justice to defend this case vigorously and ensure not one cent goes to the Proud Boys. Not for their hate. Not for their violence. Not for their attack on our country.
Sign the petition to let Attorney General Pam Bondi know the American people demand she fight back against this lawsuit, and then share with three friends to help build the public pressure we need.
Thanks for all you do.
