Mississippi’s Operation Good is at stake.
This community violence intervention program has been a historic model that has made a significant difference for Black men and teens.
Operation Good helps young people figure out their priorities, gives mentorship, coaching, and helps point them in the right direction. The program also provides them with the tools to refocus on what’s most important and helps participants start to see violence isn’t the answer.
We know programs like Operation Good are critical in our community. Addressing the root causes of gun violence is the only way to end it completely. Programs that are led by the community, for the community are what create lasting change.
But, there’s one major issue.
Back in April, the Trump administration cut more than $800 million in grants managed by the justice department’s Office of Justice Programs (OJP) to organizations like Operation Good, who work in underserved Black and Latino communities.
The Trump administration took away Operation Good’s $250 million grant as part of these cuts, amounting to 20% of its budget.
The loss of federal funds means less money for things like gas for intervention workers to get to the sites of shootings and do their nightly drives through the neighborhood.
Intervention workers are the core of Operation Good, without them none of this work would be possible.
Yet, the Trump administration doesn’t care. They don’t care about our safety or our well-being. They care about lining their pockets with NRA and gun lobby cash.
